1) Big empty walls have always enticed me. There is something so unnatural about that two dimensional surface in the real world. When the light is just right, it can loose almost all contrast, giving it a surreal look.
2) Doors have always been photographic candy. There is just something so interesting about doors. This door, shaded from the glare that catches it's surroundings, is somehow both kind and ominous. These differences in lighting create a high key image of brights and darks.
3) There is a lifelessness to college dorms. I'm pretty sure they use the same white paint found in insane asylums. This creates interesting tones. This low key image (staying largely within the mid-tones) emphasizes this temporary living space.




Hey Henry, great striking images! The examples of light are cool although since these are black and white, it does feel like most of these are example so very soft key lighting. I agree that the first one is very low contrast; cropping out the door that gives some contrast would work nice. I like the second image! It feels a bit tilted, but it works with the atmosphere in a way - would have loved to some more of a light contrast in front of the basement apartment and the dark nook upstairs.
